Methodology

Methodology

The Ethiopian calendar (ዓመተ ምሕረት) consists of 13 months: 12 months of exactly 30 days each, and a 13th month called Pagume (ጳጉሜ) having 5 days (or 6 days in a leap year). Your exact age is computed by converting your Ethiopian birth date to astronomical Julian Day Number (JDN) and measuring the elapsed time against today's date.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How is age calculated in the Ethiopian calendar?

Age in the Ethiopian calendar counts the exact completed Ethiopian years, months, and days from your birth date. Unlike Western calendars where months have varying lengths (28 to 31 days), all 12 main Ethiopian months have exactly 30 days, plus the 13th month Pagume (5 or 6 days).

Why is the Ethiopian calendar 7 to 8 years behind the Gregorian calendar?

The Ethiopian calendar calculates the Annunciation of Jesus Christ using the calculation of Annianus of Alexandria (around 9 BC), whereas Dionysius Exiguus in Rome calculated it 7 to 8 years later. Hence, the Ethiopian year 2017 EC corresponds to 2024/2025 GC.

What is an Ethiopian Evangelist Year (ዘመን)?

Each Ethiopian year in the 4-year cycle is dedicated to one of the four Evangelists: Matthew (ማቴዎስ), Mark (ማርቆስ), Luke (ሉቃስ - the leap year), and John (ዮሐንስ).

How many days are in the 13th month, Pagume (ጳጉሜ)?

Pagume has 5 days in normal years, and 6 days during a leap year (ዘመነ ሉቃስ). A leap year occurs every 4 years without exception.

How do I convert my Ethiopian age to Western Gregorian age?

Your age in total days and elapsed physical years is the same in both calendars; however, the birth date and current date year numbers differ by 7 to 8 years. Our calculator computes both representations simultaneously.
