Methodology

Under Ethiopian pension legislation (Proclamations 1267/2022 and 1268/2022), employees who have contributed to the Social Security Pension Fund for at least ten (10) years and reached the statutory retirement age of 60 years are entitled to a lifelong monthly retirement pension. The baseline retirement benefit is thirty percent (30%) of the average monthly basic salary received during the last three (3) years of service prior to retirement. For each full year of service beyond 10 years, an additional 1.25% is added, up to an absolute statutory ceiling of seventy percent (70%) of the average salary. Employees with less than 10 years of service receive a one-time gratuity lump sum equal to 1.25 times their average monthly salary multiplied by their completed years of service.
